The Evergreen Park Public Library subscribes to a wealth of online research products that offer up-to-date, reliable information on a variety of topics. The resource links below provide content to Evergreen Park Public Library cardholders that is not available in a free Internet search.

Biography and History

Chicago Tribune

The Chicago Tribune (1985-Present) provides complete full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local companies, state industries, and people in the community. Paid advertisements are excluded.

Chicago Tribune Historical Archives

The Tribune Historical Archives includes 2.5 million obituaries and death notices from 1860-1984.Three million clippings for major events from the 1920's-1984. Entire front pages from 1900-1984.

Gale Encyclopedia of World History: War

Broad overview of war throughout world history, from ancient times to present, with a special emphasis on its causes and repercussions.

Explora (contains Masterfile Premier)

Search popular magazine articles, encyclopedias, subject specific works, primary source documents, and videos. Browse topic areas for research paper ideas. (User-friendly interface for content from MasterFile Complete. Business Source Complete, Legal Reference Research Center and Consumer Health Complete, plus videos from the Associated Press.)

Local History (Evergreen Park)

In May 2010, the Library was awarded a grant from the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board. With the grant, the Library was able to organize and digitize its local history collection and make selected items available online.

Melton’s Encyclopedia of American Religions

North American religious groups in the U.S. and Canada -- from Adventists to Zen Buddhists. Information is presented in two distinct sections, essays and directory listings describing the historical development of religious families and providing factual information about each group within those families.

UXL Encyclopedia of U.S. History

Introduces the history of the United States from pre-Colonial America to the present day. Explores the timeline of America: its founders, key historical figures, wars, events, political environment, economy, and culture.

Books and Literature

Black Literature Criticism

Focuses on writers and works published since 1950. The majority of the authors surveyed are African American, but representative African and Caribbean authors are also included.

Epics for Students

Provides critical overviews of literary epics of all time periods, nations, and cultures. Includes discussions of themes, characters, literary traditions and cultural context.

MediaonDemand

Download digital audio books, ebooks and more to your iPod, MP3 player or ebook reader. You can check out up to 5 titles at a time, and after the loan period is finished, the title is automatically “returned” to the library! No late fees! Choose from a selection of fiction and non-fiction, for all audience levels (adult, teens, and children).

Novelist Plus

Search for a fiction or non-fiction book by subject, plot summary, and more. Great resource for book clubs.

Peek-A-Book Total Access

Peek-A-Book Total Access lets children view your library collection in a whole new way. Picture book trailers can be selected from a database of hundreds of titles. Available in the Childrens Department of the library.  Just stop by and ask the children's librarian.

Poets

Information on the lives and works of classic poets. Entries include biographical information, critical analysis, and bibliographies of key primary and secondary works.

Tumblebook

A delightful selection of online storybooks, favorite classics, games, and puzzles geared toward an elementary-age reading level. The books are appealing and colorful with high interest animation that is bound to capture the attention of even the most reluctant of readers. Kids can listen to a book, or read at their own speed. A word helper feature lets them click on specific vocabulary words to hear them sounded out. There is a foreign language collection with titles in Spanish, French, even Russian and Chinese!

Twenty-First Century Novels: The First Decade

The most important fictional works of the last 10 years into view, discussing plot, characters, critical reception and more. Features broad coverage of multiethnic/multicultural communities and curricula.

UXL Encyclopedia of World Mythology

Gods and goddesses; heroes and other key characters; motifs and global themes; major myths; and national or cultural mythologies. Coverage spans a diversity of cultures, including standard Greek/Roman entries as well as Native North and South American traditions, Norse mythology, Asian Pacific mythology, Judeo-Christian tradition, and Islamic and Hindu mythologies.
