Computers for Public Use

Evergreen Park Public Library has:

  • 13 Internet workstations with Microsoft Office for public use.
  • 8 computers with filtered Internet access and Microsoft Office, and 3 tablets with educational software in the Children's department.
  • 10 laptops available for loan inside the library.
  • wireless connectivity throughout the entire facility.

A few notes:

  • The library's computers are designated for specific purposes to provide efficient and equitable service for users.
  • Librarians may deny use of the computer to anyone using it for purposes other than those designated by the library.
  • Library staff may offer basic assistance to users as time permits, but cannot offer personal instruction in the use of computer software.
  • Users should possess adequate training for proper use of computer equipment.
  • Use of the computers is on a first-come, first-served basis, no reservations.
  • Only two users may sit at a workstation at one time.
  • A parent is welcome to sit with his child while using the Internet. An adult must accompany children under age 6.

Fees

  • Evergreen Park residents with a valid Everrgreen Park library card free of fees or ines may use the computers for no fee. Evergreen Park residents may not purchase a guest pass in lieu of paying fees or fines.
  • For non-residents, there is a charge of $1.00 per one-half hour for using the library's computers, paid in advance.
  • There is no charge to use the game computers near the Activity room, and no fee for users under the age of 18.

Internet Use and Word Processing Computers

  • Users access the Internet through filtered terminals and are subject to the policy outlined in the Evergreen Park Public Library Computer and Internet Safety Policy
  • The computers can be used for up to 4 hours per day, in one-hour sessions
  • Sessions can be consecutive as long as no one is waiting to use the computer, but you must log on again after each session ends

With respect to any of its computers with Internet access, the library uses technology protection measures in order to (a) protect minors against access through such computers to visual depictions which are obscene, constitute child pornography, or are otherwise harmful to minors, and (b) protect all users against access through such computers to visual depictions that are obscene or constitute child pornography.

Parents and legal guardians are responsible to monitor their children’s use of library computers and the Internet as they deem necessary, and are encouraged to supervise their children’s Internet sessions. Parents and guardians who do not wish to authorize their minor children to use library computers may so indicate in writing for their children under age 18, and the library card issued will be coded to preclude use of the library’s computers.

Laptops for Public Use

Laptop users must be of high school age or older. Each user must leave a valid form of identification (Driver's license, State ID, School ID, or Military ID) with the Circulation staff.

Laptops can be used in the library only, on a first-come, first-served basis. Laptops may be used for one full day. The library reserves the right to shorten  the loan period as required by demand. Laptops are available free of charge for Evergreen Park residents with cards in good standing. There is a $2 per day usage fee for nonresidents. Laptops shut down 30 minutes before the library closes.

Computer Instruction

  • The Computer Lab assistant or Adult Services department will assist with your questions about using the Internet, email, and other computer-related issues in the library as time permits.

Computer Tutor

One-on-One computer help, by appointment only: 708.422.8522.

Do you need a little help learning how to use technology? Our bilingual computer tutor, Jessica Ramos, will offer private, one-hour sessions on using a computer, the Internet, email, Microsoft Office, and basic computer programs. Notify the Circulation desk, and the computer tutor will contact you to schedule an appointment.

Printing and Saving

  • Printing may only be done on library-supplied paper, with the exception of resume printing
  • Black and white prints cost $.10 per page
  • Color printing costs $.50 per page
  • Data may be saved to a portable storage device or email account. A USB drive is recommended
  • You cannot save to the desktop, and all user files are deleted when the computers are shut down

Printer Directions for Home or Wireless Use

You can send a print job to the printer at the library from your home computer or from a laptop or wireless device while you are in the library. Simply use your Internet browser.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to the library's homepage at www.evergreenparklibrary.org
  2. Click on the wireless printing icon on the homepage
  3. Choose black & white ($.10 per page) or color ($.50 per page).
  4. User info:This is anything that you can use to identify your print job when you arrive at the library. Most patrons use their first name or initials.
  5. Select document: The browse button will provide a drop-down menu so you can choose any document that is on your computer. Double click on the document you wish to print. Its identifying information will be displayed in the box. You can also print from a website by typing in the complete web address.
  6. Click on arrow in lower right corner to proceed to next step.
  7. The next screen will show how many pages you printed and what the cost is. If this is correct click the green printer icon.
  8. Screen will show “Your request is being processed.”
  9. Proceed to the print release station in the Computer Lab. Select your print job and pay for your copies. Print jobs will be deleted if not printed within two hours.

Copies and Scans

The library offers a few options for copying and scanning:

  • You can use the copier by the Circulation desk for $.10 per page.
  • With the Simple Scan, located in the Computer Lab, you can scan books or papers to a USB drive, email, fax, Google Docs or print.  Scanning to a USB drive, email or Google Docs is free, faxes are $1.00 per page and printing is $.10 for black and white and $.50 for color.
